Preserving a Community Treasure

The historic Matheson House, a cornerstone of Gainesville’s heritage, is closed temporarily to the public to undergo necessary refurbishments and upgrades. Originally built in the late 1850s, the Matheson House stands as one of the three oldest structures in Gainesville, rich in history and an enduring testament to the architectural style of the period. This cherished landmark is an integral part of the museum’s mission to preserve and showcase Alachua County’s diverse history.

The rehabilitation of the Matheson House will be partially funded through anticipated grants from the Florida Division of Historic Resources, which will support vital systems upgrades and structural preservation. However, community contributions are essential to fully realize this project, and donations are encouraged.

Preserving historic sites like the Matheson House is crucial for honoring the legacies of our past and ensuring that future generations can engage with these invaluable cultural resources. The preservation efforts will help safeguard the structural integrity of the house, enhance visitor experiences, and provide educational opportunities for the community.
