Learn how to research your family!

Genealogist Tatanya Peterson will share how she traced her family line back to Hampton and Grace Hathcock, her 4X great grandparents, who were enslaved on the plantation of James Chesnut, near Alachua, Florida. Learn about the discoveries she made and the steps she took in her research. Karen Kirkman, a volunteer transcriber, will discuss how to access and query the online Alachua County Ancient Records, and what might be discovered there.

Tatanya Peterson, descendant and genealogist, is semi-retired from UF Health at Shands Hospital.

Karen Kirkman, President & Historian of the Historic Haile Homestead Inc., has spent close to 20 years researching the enslaved people on the Haile and Chesnut plantations in Alachua County. She is also a member of the Alachua County Historical Commission.
